Sierra Speaker Series: Tahoe Animal Movement and Migration

Sierra Speaker Series: Tahoe Animal Movement and Migration

In partnership with California State Parks and the Nevada County Library, the monthly Sierra Speaker Series connects folks to the rich cultural and natural history of the area.

The mountains of the Tahoe region bring dramatic swings in both the resources available for, and the conditions faced by, the animals that spend time here.  Periodic movements help many of these animals survive those changes and hopefully make it all worthwhile.  This talk provides an overview of migration basics along with notable local examples of movements from a wide variety of species at local, regional, and global scales.

Originally a seasonal migrant himself, Will has lived in the Tahoe area since 1994, and is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Tahoe Institute for Natural Science.  Will received his Ph.D. in Ecology, Evolution, and Conservation Biology from the University of Nevada, Reno, studying bird communities in Sierra Nevada aspen habitats, but his interests span all taxa, conducting research on chipmunks, butterflies, tiger beetles, salamanders, and montane rabbits and hares as well.
