Formed in 2009 by Washiw elders, Washiw Zulshish Gum Tah- Nu strives to promote healing and cultural revitalization in their communities, addressing the trauma of forced removal and cultural erosion. Facing challenges such as substance abuse, violence, degenerative disease from western food systems and medicines, and suicide, as well as environmental threats to the lake itself, invasive species and pollution, they are advocating for reclaiming stewardship for the healing of the land, the water and the people.
Generations after the Wašišiw people were displaced from the Truckee-Tahoe region, the time has come for their return to their ancestral homelands. The Truckee-Tahoe community now has a unique opportunity to support this journey by helping to purchase land in El Dorado County. This land will be used to create Wašiw Than-Nu Ungal (The People’s House), built in the style of the traditional California roundhouses. We are raising funds to acquire one of the last undeveloped parcels in the Tahoe Basin. Your support is crucial—whether through donations or by spreading the word. Please help bring the Washiw people home.
